This is the island where there are no motor vehicles which instantly makes it a world away from home. Transport is either by walking, bicycle, or in colourfully adorned horse and cart similar to something you might see in a fairy tale.

The East of the island is where all the hype is because it is also the place the ferry’s dock. The foot traffic inevitably attracts stores, guesthouses and restaurants making it the most crowded parts of the island. A long stretch of white sandy beach is on this side of the island too, and a popular place for swimming, water sports and lounging on the sand. The northern part of the island is similar, but less busy. The beach is pristine, the ocean bright blue, and the atmosphere peaceful with a hint of restaurant or bar flare thrown in for good measure.

The reality though, is that the entire island is surrounded by ling stretches of white sandy beach with tepid waters perfect for swimming. If you want to know where the best Gili Trawangan beach is, the answer is the entire way around the island.

Gili Trawangan Turtles

While there are plenty of boats available for day trips snorkelling with turtles, you don’t have to go far. Swimming close to shore on the numerous beaches on the island offers ample opportunities to have turtles swim right beside you. Snorkel sets can be hired cheaply for extra visibility, and if you’re swimming on Gili Trawangan theres very little chance you’ll leave without having swum with completely wild turtles.
